Jesus Experienced – Revival on Timor [#08g]
How Jesus was experienced through the Holy Spirit in the revival on Timor.
Jesus did great things on Timor, because through his Holy Spirit he could be experienced by many people there. An eyewitness of the revival on Timor account by Mel Tari.

In 1965, the Lord began a revival on the island of Timor. As in the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit descended upon us and worked miraculous things on us with His power and love. Before the revival, we were just a cold, dead bunch of people, but Jesus loved us anyway. However, after meeting Jesus face to face, we were transformed. We suddenly got into great, joyful excitement about our Lord.
For someone who previously sat bored in church every Sunday, but then suddenly becomes a close friend of the Lord Jesus, and discovers that He is still accomplishing the same things today as He did two thousand years ago, this is tremendously exciting. Perhaps you have heard about some of the miracles that the Lord Jesus performed for us. There is so much to tell; I myself have witnessed how the sick were healed and thousands of souls saved, how he turned water into wine for our communion services, how food was multiplied, how the dead were raised.
In Noenoni
One event in particular has remained in my memory. One evening, soon after the revival began, we met with our group in Noenoni for special meetings in the small church in the center of the village. That evening the little church was packed. All the rickety wooden pews were occupied by women, so the men had to sit on the dirty floor. Those who came later had to make do with a standing place outside and try to catch a glimpse through the windows.
After the sermon ended, we asked if anyone wanted a prayer for healing. Immediately a mother came forward with her 17-year-old son. “What could possibly be wrong with him?” thought I. “He looks perfectly normal and healthy.” The mother, however, had tears in her eyes. She informed us that her son had been blind and deaf since birth, so of course he could not speak.
Longing for healing
“I am so desperate, I want Jesus to heal my son,” she sobbed. The other Christians in the church also looked as if they were close to tears. Probably they were all very fond of the boy. They all wished him a normal, happy life.
Later the priest told me that he had been praying silently all evening, “Oh Lord, heal Gabriel! And if You do nothing else today, please heal Gabriel.” After we had prayed for a few minutes, the Lord spoke to our team leader and gave her the gift of knowledge: “This boy’s great-grandfather was very godless,” she told everyone, “He was a real hero in the tribal feuds; but he got his strength from the demons. One day he decided to make a victory sacrifice to the devil. He took a little child and buried it alive in the bog. Have you heard about this? Can you relate to this story?” she asked.
“Oh yes,” answered the mother and the friends and neighbors. “We know about that. Everything you said is true.” “Well,” continued the leader of our group, “the Lord made it clear to me that this is the reason Gabriel cannot see and hear. A demonic curse has passed on to him from his great-grandfather. But praise the Lord, for our God has all power over the devil.” So we immediately united in faith and renounced the demonic curse in Jesus’ name. We asked the Lord not only to deliver the boy from it, but also to make him completely well.
Instant healing
That same evening, the Lord answered our prayers: Gabriel was instantly healed! His eyes opened wide and he looked around him. He stared in amazement at the dirty floor as if he thought it was gold. He stroked the small wooden bench on which he sat as if it were a throne chair. He must have felt he had been transported to heaven. When we began to talk to him, his face beamed with joy. The more we talked, the more he smiled. But what amazed us most was that he began to speak instantly, even though he had never heard a word in his life. Probably the Holy Spirit was his private teacher.
At first, he uttered very simple words like dad and mom. But soon he could speak complete sentences. His quiet, dark world was suddenly filled with all kinds of sounds and was very, very interesting. Everything fascinated him – an ant crawling around on the floor, the big lamp hanging from the ceiling (he thought it was the sun!), his mother’s soft, happy voice. Everyone in the church was so excited and full of joy that we could not stop thanking the Lord. I kept thinking of the words Jesus had said two thousand years ago.
That evening I saw with my own eyes the proof that it is still true today: “And whatever you ask in prayer, if you believe, you will receive” (Matth. 21, 22).
